Why I Became a Mental Health First Aid Instructor: A Personal Journey

In my diverse roles across aged care, community, and disability sectors, I've witnessed first-hand the profound challenges of mental health issues. These experiences, combined with my own battles with anxiety, depression, ADHC, and dyslexia, and my journey of acceptance as a gay individual in a small community, have not only deepened my understanding but also ignited my passion to advocate for mental health awareness and destigmatisation. This personal connection to mental health challenges is what drives my mission as a Licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor.

These challenges have profoundly shaped my empathy and driven me to help others facing similar struggles. Understanding the complexities of mental health from multiple perspectives has enabled me to contribute more effectively to positive change in these areas.

The urgency of addressing mental health concerns is underscored by a 2022 report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, which revealed that about 1 in 5 Australians had experienced a mental health issue in the previous 12 months. This statistic highlights the critical need for informed and compassionate support and emphasises the impact that skilled first aid training can have.

As a Licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor, my mission is to equip individuals and workplaces with the skills to effectively discuss and manage mental health issues, thus helping to overcome the stigma associated with mental health boosting resilience & enhance mental wellbeing.
