Preparing for Tomorrow

Preparing for Tomorrow: The Intersection of Emerging Job Skills and Executive Functioning

Last month, the World Economic Forum announced that the job skills market is poised for a significant transformation, with up to 44% disruption expected over the next five years. This change is largely due to the pace of IT developments outstripping our ability to adapt our skills quickly enough. In light of this, it's crucial to focus on enhancing five key skills to stay ahead: analytical thinking, creative thinking, problem-solving, AI & big data, and leadership coupled with curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning.

The Critical Role of Executive Functioning

This revelation led me to contemplate the relationship between these in-demand skills and executive functioning (EF) - a set of cognitive processes that include attentional control, working memory, inhibition, and problem-solving. Interestingly, many of these processes are believed to originate in the brain’s prefrontal cortex, a region not solely dependent on IQ for predicting performance. Enhancing EF can be achieved through a balanced approach to well-being, which encompasses getting adequate sleep, setting and achieving manageable goals, practising meditation, regular exercise, engaging in new learning experiences, and effectively regulating and naming our feelings.

Kolb's Cycle for Caring Professionals

Upon further reflection, I also considered the relevance of Kolb's experiential learning cycle, particularly for caring professionals. This model emphasises the importance of connecting deeply, planning interventions, distinguishing a client's experiences from one's own, and finding rejuvenation. It underscores the necessity of empathy and self-care in professional settings, which is increasingly pertinent in today's fast-paced and emotionally taxing environments.

Conclusion

The skills of tomorrow, underscored by robust executive functioning and supported by a cycle of caring, resonate deeply with me as essential tools to navigate the future. As we look forward to the evolving landscape of job skills, integrating these cognitive and emotional competencies will not only prepare us for the challenges ahead but also enrich our personal and professional lives.
