Recognising what is happening
Distinguish observable changes in behaviour or performance from assumptions about their cause, while considering the wider workplace context.
Supporting people while maintaining clear expectations
Mental health concerns and performance issues do not always occur separately. Managers may need to support an employee who is experiencing difficulty while also addressing attendance, behaviour, workload, communication or performance expectations.
This practical workshop helps leaders separate observation from assumption, respond constructively when mental health enters a workplace conversation, maintain accountability with empathy, and recognise when HR involvement or referral may be appropriate.

Practical discussion, workplace scenarios and guided skills practice across four connected areas.
Distinguish observable changes in behaviour or performance from assumptions about their cause, while considering the wider workplace context.
Prepare for and open difficult conversations, listen effectively, explore the employee’s perspective and respond when mental health concerns are raised.
Maintain clear workplace expectations while considering reasonable support, role boundaries, employee ownership and what sits within a manager’s control.
Clarify actions, support, follow-up and responsibilities, including when HR, professional support, referral or escalation may be appropriate.
Use observable information rather than assumptions or diagnosis when mental health, wellbeing and workplace performance may intersect.
Combine listening, curiosity and empathy with clear expectations, accountability and appropriate workplace boundaries.
Clarify follow-up and recognise when the leader can act within their role or when HR, workplace support or professional referral may be needed.
For people leaders, managers, supervisors and others responsible for workplace performance and employee support.
The workshop is designed as professional development. It provides space to practise workplace conversations using relevant scenarios and discuss how the approach can be applied in your organisation.
It does not train participants to diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.
