Practical skills for initial support

Standard MHFA teaches participants how to approach and assist another adult experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. It covers common mental health problems, supportive conversations, crisis responses and ways to encourage professional and other suitable supports.

What participants practise

  • Recognising changes that may suggest someone needs help.
  • Listening and responding without judgement.
  • Applying the MHFA action plan in a range of situations.
  • Looking after themselves while supporting others.

Course and accreditation

All three formats cover Standard Mental Health First Aid through instructor-led learning, with self-paced eLearning added in blended formats. Participants may complete a separate post-course assessment for MHFAider accreditation; attending the course alone does not confer accreditation.
